Whole Family Approach to Employability

Are you a parent and looking to build confidence, access training or attend groupwork sessions?

FARE’s supporting Families Project offers is a community-based parental employability programme for parents who are unemployed and looking for personal development opportunities, training, volunteering, or support to access further education or gain employment/self-employment. We also support parents who are in employment and are interested in upskilling or looking for a career change.

The project offers support to:

  • Access financial advice

  • Access funding for training

  • Gain qualifications

  • CV writing

  • Interview skills

  • Job searching

We offer 1-to-1 appointments based within the local communities and Shettleston Jobcentre along with a range of courses including:

  • Personal development and wellbeing (delivered in partnership with Glasgow Kelvin College),

  • Life skills – cooking (in partnership with Barrowfield Community Centre)

  • The Marah Group run by Church House, Bridgeton supported by FARE and Glasgow Life Supporting Families Project

  • SCQF-rated qualifications (Emergency First at Work, Manual Handling, Health and Safety in the Workplace)

  • Bespoke needs-led training.

The Marah group sharing skills, culture and great chat!

The cooking group at Barrowfields community centre rustled up a great meal and left with ingredients to cook at home.

Here is a quote from a single parent who was unemployed at the time of engaging with the project. He was supported to access the Training and Support Fund to fund offshore training. He now is full-time employment working in scaffolding offshore.

“I first learned about Fare and the great work you do because Fare where proactive and reached out to me via my son's school.

For me personally, this was an amazing way to gain access to help. Firstly, it showed people cared, which in itself is life-changing. This allowed me not to feel shame about accessing help, which in all honesty would have probably stopped me from seeking the help available from Fare. So, I can't stress enough how amazing an organisation Fare is, to get right out there, into the coal face of social problems, find the people who need their help and stick with them throughout the whole journey. As I've tried to express to the team in the past, I Love them, I Love what they do and how they do it, and they will always have a place in my heart for the help they gave me. They are life-changing, inspiring, and treat people as people, individuals instead of clients or cases to be managed.”

Another quote from a parent who moved to the UK from Romania. She was a qualified teacher in Romania but could not find work UK.

“They helped me a lot, they supported me to get funding for a course (Diploma In Public Service Interpreting) and I am very happy to be doing this course. The support has meant a lot as it is very important for me to start my path and get a job with qualifications. The project has helped me a lot to grow in confidence and to see the possibility of getting a job in the near future. For me and my children -this will change our life.”

Our Supporting Families project is funded by Clyde Gateway through the Parental Employability Support Fund (PSEF). Our project supports parents whose child/family member is in Primary 5 and above and lives within the Eastbank and St Mungo’s Academy learning community – this area spans from Carlton, Barrowfields, Dalmarnock to Shettleston and Greenfields.
